ACT! Tip

Backing Up Your Database

What is the most valuable piece of your ACT! program?  That should be an easy one:  your data.  Without your data, you would be lost as would many of us.  Because your data is such a valuable piece of your business, you should take the proper steps to ensure you can retrieve data in the extreme case of data corruption or hard drive failure.

  How to Backup Your Database
1.  To backup your data, go to File | Backup

2. This will open up a backup dialog box.  Click the Browse button and select a folder and file name. Generally I name the file with the current date.   It is also advisable to select a drive different from the one where the database is being stored.  For example, if the database is on your C drive, backup to a network drive, or an external device (Floppy A Drive, Zip drive, etc.).

3. Click on the Options tab to select additional ACT! files (templates, reports, layouts, etc)  to backup.   There is also a box you can check to remind you to backup every so many days.

4. Once you have named the file, and selected the additional files to be backed up, click the Start button.  You will see a status bar moving across your screen.  Once the backup is finished, you will get a dialog box stating that the Backup is complete.  Click OK and you are ready to continue working in your database.
